Hereford Town Centre
Hey friends!
It has been quite some time since I paid Hereford a visit after studying at the Art College here for part of my Graphic Communications Degree it holds a place in my heart, this time I got to experience the town with Matt because anywhere together is always better!
Arriving in Hereford town centre feels like stepping into a delightful mix of past and present, nestled amidst the picturesque English countryside. The drive alone set the tone for the day, winding through scenic country roads flanked by lush fields and the occasional wildlife sighting. We even saw a wild pheasant casually taking a stroll—unfortunately, we couldn't stop to snap a photo, but it was a charming end to our adventure.
Upon arrival, we found Hereford to be an eclectic blend of the old and new. The town's beauty lies in its quaintness, with historical landmarks like the cathedral, the old Black and White House Museum, and the tourist office providing a sense of timelessness. Meanwhile, newer establishments offer a contemporary and industrial vibe that I find equally appealing.
The town's layout, circling around a bustling town square, is perfect for a relaxed day out. It’s a great spot to sit with a coffee or grab a bite to eat while indulging in some prime people-watching.
One of my favorite stops was the Tiger Copenhagen store. It's always a whimsical experience, filled with colorful, reasonably priced items. The Hereford branch didn’t disappoint—large, light, and full of wonder as we navigated its winding layout. I didn’t purchase anything this time, but I’m already regretting that decision a bit!
We also explored numerous charity shops, hunting for bargains and unexpected treasures. Although I almost added a collectible meerkat to my collection, I ultimately decided against it due to its condition. Matt, on the other hand, had his eyes set on the bakeries, eagerly searching for the perfect pie or pasty.
Ironically, the highlight of our trip was a visit to a Polish supermarket. Despite not being Polish, we loved the experience. The aisles were packed with intriguing goodies, and we managed to stock up on snacks, soup, and even a drink with cactus for just a tenner! The shop owner was incredibly friendly, helping me with instructions for a product that had no English on the packet.
A Few Bumps Along the Way
While our day in Hereford was mostly wonderful, it wasn’t without a few hiccups. At lunch, we encountered some abrupt attitudes while ordering jacket potatoes. The menu layout was overwhelming, and after being snapped at, I had to explain my ADHD and the difficulty I was having. Thankfully, their attitude improved, and the food was delicious. I had a classic cheese and beans potato with salad, while Matt opted for a hot meat roll. Despite the initial frustration, our lunch was satisfying and reasonably priced at £11 for both.
One downside, albeit minor, was the sheer number of charity shops. While we love a good bargain hunt, it started to feel a bit repetitive. It seemed like we kept visiting the same type of store over and over, which got a bit tiring.
Lastly, the town centre itself can be seen quite quickly. After about an hour, we realized we’d walked in circles a few times. While it’s perfect for a leisurely meal or socializing, it might not hold your attention for an entire day unless you plan some specific activities.
Final Thoughts..
Hereford is beautiful and definitely worth a visit! My advice? Have a look online and plan your stops, or be prepared to embrace the abundance of charity shops. It’s a charming town with much to offer, whether you’re there for the historical sights, the shopping, or just a relaxing day out.
